Miami’s George Elias nears 99 still practicing, mentoring, and giving back

George Elias is a remarkable figure who is still actively practicing law and mentoring others as he approaches his 99th birthday. His distinguished career spans over seven decades and began with his enlistment in the Navy for World War II, though the war ended while he was still training. After graduating with honors from George Washington University’s law school in 1955, Elias quickly landed a prestigious position with the U.S. Department of Justice. At just 23, he found himself sitting before the U.S. Supreme Court at the solicitor general’s table on the team that handled treason cases, and he was later admitted to the Supreme Court Bar. He subsequently transitioned to the tax division before establishing a private practice in trust and tax law in Miami, which he continues to operate today, demonstrating a sharp intellect and ability to recall detailed case files from more than 50 years ago.

Beyond his legal practice, Elias has been an influential mentor, embodying professional ethics and generosity. His dedication to guiding young lawyers is exemplified by his more than 50-year relationship with past Bar President Edward Blumberg, whom Elias immediately took under his wing when Blumberg was a young clerk. Blumberg credits Elias with encouraging his involvement in Bar leadership and continues to rely on his wisdom and perspective. Elias, known for his modest and humble nature, encapsulates his professional philosophy in the advice he offers new lawyers: “Do what is right morally and ethically. Make your living and help others.” He also imparts a practical tip about confirming the “soundness of the facts” at the start of a case to ensure counsel can represent a client with a clear conscience.

Elias’s life has been deeply rooted in faith and extensive charitable service, reflecting the values of generosity instilled by his immigrant parents. He served as a de facto counsel for his church, providing free tax and financial advice for 30 years, and served on the boards of several South Florida charitable organizations. His most significant philanthropic effort is his involvement with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; he was a founding member of the group that provided the initial funding for the charity in 1959 and is now the sole living member of that original cohort. This commitment gained a profound personal dimension when his son, Christopher, succumbed to leukemia in 1966. Today, having been honored by the Ellis Island Honors Society, Elias continues to counsel on tax matters, but his daily priority is caring for his wife of 70 years, Charme, all while maintaining a remarkably optimistic and engaged approach to life.
